BONDED BEAD OR FOAMFILL ??
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
| Q. |
What is the difference between Bonded Bead and Foamfill ? |

|
| A. |
Bonded beads are small polystyrene beads similar to that found in a beanbag except they are grey in colour (platinum). The beads are blown into the wall under minimum pressure and flow within the cavity. They work very well in new build or empty cavities where there are no impediments to hinder the movement of the beads within the cavities.
Where there is existing aeroboard the residual cavity can often be reduced below the permissible 40mm resulting in poor distribution of the beads and
voids left in the cavity post installation.
Bonded bead cannot be used in cavities which have electrical cables within.
Foamfill is an injected foam system similar to a shaving foam and installed under 130 lbs. pressure which ensures there is no risk of any voids caused by poorly fitted aeroboard or any other impediments within the cavity.
The foamfill system works particularly well with existing board as a ‘TOP UP’ and can often help to push the existing board tight against the inner leaf and then fill the residual cavity before solidifying.
The Foamfill system poses no threat to any cables within the cavity. |

| Q. |
Is bead or Foam the best insulation in terms of heat loss ? |
| A. |
Both systems are pretty much the same in terms of insulation values, the actual performance of the product depends on the particular application.
Either product is excellent for empty cavities, however for peace of mind the
Foamfill system is more fool proof for ‘Top ups’. |

| Q. |
Are both systems eligible for grant aid under the S.E.A.I better Energy Homes Scheme ? |
| A. |
Because ‘Certainfill’ platinum bonded bead is certified to the Irish Standard N.S.A.I 0168 / 141, a grant of €250.00 is available under the Better Energy Homes Scheme. However to avail of the grant a B.E.R is required (building energy rating). This usually costs in the region of 150 - €200.
The Foamfill system is installed in compliance with B.S. 5618 (British Standard) and does not qualify under the Scheme. |

| Q. |
I am confused as some sales people recommend Foamfill and others Bead ? |
| A |
A lot of companies only do bonded bead as it is quite an easy business to start and uncomplicated to install.
Foamfill is a far more expensive in terms of technology and installation equipment.
There are very few installation companies offering the Foamfill system.
Premier Insulations are in business 28 years and do both bead and foam systems. We have no vested interest in selling one product over another and therefore you the customer receives recommendation only for the product which is deemed most suitable for your particular home. |
